The Top 5 Tips for Proofreading

  1. Print off the text – it’s usually easier to spot mistakes on paper than the computer screen.
  2. Always give yourself ample time to read through the text at least twice.  You will nearly always find missed spelling mistakes and other errors the second time round.
  3. Yes, use the spell-checker, but don’t rely on it wholly to spot all errors.  Use it to check any words underlined in red or green.
  4. Use a dictionary to check any words you are not 100% sure about.  Do you really mean “stationery” instead of “stationary”?
  5. Best of all – get someone else to check your work once you have finished proofreading.  A fresh pair of eyes can be invaluable at spotting something you may have overlooked.
