- Print off the text – it’s usually easier to spot mistakes on paper than the computer screen.
- Always give yourself ample time to read through the text at least twice. You will nearly always find missed spelling mistakes and other errors the second time round.
- Yes, use the spell-checker, but don’t rely on it wholly to spot all errors. Use it to check any words underlined in red or green.
- Use a dictionary to check any words you are not 100% sure about. Do you really mean “stationery” instead of “stationary”?
- Best of all – get someone else to check your work once you have finished proofreading. A fresh pair of eyes can be invaluable at spotting something you may have overlooked.
